PHOTOGRAPHY is a medium that many artists have turned to in one way or another. From the manipulated polaroids of Lucas Samaras’s ‘Photo-Transformations’, to Cindy Sherman’s ‘Untitled Film-Stills’, or Nikos Kessanlis’s use of photography in order to capture the sillouettes of people in his ‘Phantasmagoria’ series. Yet for many contemporary artists, it’s not so much about intervention on this medium, but more about getting the right ‘click’ at the right time. Contemporary artists today, continue to use photography in their work, and mobile phones have added yet another dimension of creativity to this medium.

“Photography is inherently an analytic discipline. Where a painter starts with a blank canvas and builds a picture, a photographer starts with the messiness of the world and selects a picture.” (Stephen Shore, The Nature of Photographs) FokiaNou Art Space has invited a mix of five foreign and local artists whose primary medium is photography to come together for a group show. Each artist focuses on a particular series of work, from nature to architecture to people in various environments, evoking a sense of place and context through her own manipulation of the image.

Participating artists: Maria Bourbou, Lynne Buchanan, Susan Daboll, Linda Kessler, Kiveli Zachariou. Curated by Mary Cox and Panagiotis Voulgaris.
FokiaNou Art Space is an artist-run project space in the intimacy of a small apartment in an old building in the center of Athens. The space encourages collaborative creative efforts between Greek and foreign artists, thereby promoting and supporting the local art community. The space hosts exhibitions, workshops and projects under the direction of two artists, Mary Cox and Panagiotis Voulgaris.
