Maltabe’s ‘Time-Lapse’ at FokiaNou

IN HER SOLO exhibition at FokiaNou Art Space, entitled Time-Lapse, Dimitra Maltabe explores the palimpsest of  personal experiences of  place and time over generations, asking to what extent the traces of these experiences are transferred and influence us. The artist’s grandmother was born and raised in the village of Gortynia, Arcadia, where she lived until marrying and moving to Cairo. The artist’s mother was born and raised in Cairo, until moving to Athens, where Maltabe was born and raised. The exhibition is an enquiry into the connections between times and places, and their influences on the artist herself.

Maltabe focuses first on Gortynia, where she has visited every August since she was a child. In an installation, her grandmother’s crochet work is projected onto maps, acting as a legend or the key to the meaning. The exhibition also includes a section which is Maltabe’s own studio, where she shows work in progress in the form of drawings, notes and other materials and allows the viewer to get a close-up view of her artistic process.

Dimitra Maltabe (b. 1971, Athens) studied painting and scenography in Athens, A.S.K.T. (ed. R. Papaspyrou, ed. G. Ziaka) and in the Netherlands, K.A.B.K, Royal Academy of Fine Arts, the Hague, with an Erasmus scholarship. In 2000 she completed an MA in Fine Arts at the Kent Institute of Art and Design / University of Kent, Canterbury, U.K. In her work she explores the interaction between humans and the environment, the recording of memory and how it is modified over time, as well as the similarities between biological structures and the natural environment. She has presented her work in individual and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad including the 6th Biennale of Contemporary Art of Thessaloniki with Imaginary Homes in 2017, and has participated in artist-in-residence programmes. Since 2002 she has been adjunct professor at the University of the West Attica (TEI of Athens).
