ON THURSDAY, APRIL 3, the Minister of Culture, Mrs. Lina Mendoni, inaugurated the exhibition Pericles and Dico Byzantios – Pictorial Affinities and Contrasts, at the B&M Theocharakis Foundation. The exhibition runs till September 21, 2025.
The work of the leading painters Pericles and Dico Byzantios, father and son, is presented together for the first time at the B&M Theocharakis Foundation, with important paintings from their artistic journey. Part of the works come from the collection of Alexandros Liakopoulos and are complemented by loans from the collections of Antonis Komninos, EMST, Nikos Papageorgiou, Kyriakos Tsiflakos, and Christos Larsinos.

As the director of the Foundation’s art program and curator of the exhibition, Takis Mavrotas, states: “It is a difficult undertaking to approach the impact of their relationship, their relatedness but also their aesthetic differences, with their common thematic and formal features, their characteristics and influences, their different currents and rhythms. The juxtaposition of these two pictorial worlds reveals their different character, as throughout their lives they struggled with the indeterminate and mysterious universe of creation. We are also given the opportunity to see through the work of Pericles Byzantios, the inspired and studied work of Dico Byzantios, but also to distinguish their direct connections with modern European art, especially that of France.
The aim of both was for their art to express a new morphological proposal, a Greece within Europe, with deep roots that touch the essence of today”

This exhibition of works by Pericles and Dico Byzantios offers us a broad introduction to the creative adventure of two important painters with intuitive thinking and a comprehensive aesthetic view, as, with their work, they transcend the decomposition of our world, creating images that have crystallized through the soul and the secret depths of the spirit. The uniqueness of their character: responsibility, sensitivity, enthusiasm, and their aesthetic culture led to the ideal completeness of their personal expression with their endless creative activity and their deep sensibility. The purity of their work reveals the breadth of a multi-modal painting with clarity, grace, thoughtfulness, that firmly claims its place in tomorrow.

The exhibition is accompanied by a multi-page catalogue with a greeting from the President of the Foundation, Mr. Basil Theocharakis, and essays by Stefanos Daskalakis, Alexis Veroukas, Ifigenia Botzakis, Takis Mavrotas, as well as excerpts from Dimitris Papastamos, Eugene Ionesco, Michel Foucault, etc., which analyze the enormous contribution of Pericles and Dico Byzantios to European painting.
