Art Athina 2025: A contemporary panorama of art

ART ATHINA 2025, hosted at the Zappeion Megaron from September 18 through 22, 2025, places at its core the emergence of new directions and the critical concerns that redefine today’s global artistic landscape. Art Athina, the most significant annual meeting point for the visual arts in Greece and one of the oldest art fairs in Europe, is organised by the Hellenic Art Galleries Association.

At its established autumn rendezvous, Art Athina will showcase a comprehensive reflection of contemporary artistic creation, with the participation of 72 galleries from Greece and abroad, exhibiting a wide variety of artworks from painting and sculpture to photography and digital art.

Continuing its yearly tradition, Art Athina expands beyond its core of the gallery booths, with a multifaceted parallel programme that resonates with the pulse of contemporary art and includes the Sectors of Design, Projects, Performance and public Talks with internationally acclaimed participants. More than an art exhibition, the fair serves as a vibrant arena for experimentation, dialogue, and cultural exchange.

Focusing on the documentation of emerging trends and fostering constructive dialogue, the public is invited to explore the galleries’ curated selections and engage with the international directions shaping the contemporary art scene, reaffirming the pivotal role of Art Athina as a platform for the study, experience, and promotion of contemporary art.

For the third consecutive year, τhe fair is under the general direction of Antonis Kourkoulos.

At the age of 82, world-renowned art restorer and art dealer Stavros Mihalarias finally decided to show his own artworks, at this year’s Art Athina. Mihalarias has been creating art from a young child, but had kept it private till recent years due to his work as a prominent restorer, both here and abroad. Artists such as Henry Moore and Francis Bacon had seen his talent and had spurred him on to continue creating, in parallel to his brilliant career. Mihalarias sees his current solo exhibition at Art Athina, as a ‘statement’. Above, the artist/restorer stands with 2 of his dynamic works that celebrate the human form.

Art Athina 2025 comprises of the following Sectors:

  • Main, exhibits booths from local and international galleries presenting their curated selections. Below is the full list of participating galleries.
  • Design, established as an integral part of the fair, features galleries specialising in design with a focus on traditional techniques. This year’s main focus is glass – fragile and resilient, transparent and layered – inviting us to look through it and beyond its surface.

In contrast, the vintage furniture that anchor the viewer’s gaze, “weave memory and history in the vocabulary of contemporary design”, according to the curators of the sector, Tina Daskalantonaki and Manthos Kaloumenos.

The Italian art space spazio b5 returns for the second time to Art Athina, exhibiting once again the anthropomorphic figures with owl heads of Mons Jorgensen, an artist who recently moved to Greece from London. The owl, the primary attribute and symbol of Athena, took on a female form in last year’s exhibition. But this year, in this new series, there is also a male figure. Above, the artist with one of her new works.
  • Projects, curated by Odette Kouzou, is showcasing the most experimental and collective practices of the contemporary artistic scene, presented by independent art spaces and non-profit cultural organisations. This year, Projects focus on rituals and everyday practices that function as a means for creating social bonds and relationships.
  • Performance, this year showcases a multi-dimensional programme inside and outside of the Zappeion Megaron that becomes a site of encounter for performance and dance with photography and digital art. Flux Laboratory, returns to Art Athina, and together with Nicolas Vamvouklis, the curator of the sector for the second consecutive year, present a programme that invites visitors to engage in a vibrant setting of creative exchange and artistic dialogue. In more detail, Konstantinos Rigos and the Ballet of the Greek National Opera present the spectacular finale of “Golden Age”. Renowned photographer and author Ari Seth Cohen, the creator of Advanced Style, a project devoted to “capturing the elegance of later life”, showcases a distinctive photography exhibition in collaboration with Judith Boyd, one of his most iconic muses, a model, blogger and creator of Style Crone. The Art Athina visitors will have the opportunity not only to pose their questions on creative expression and positive approaches to aging, but also – should they captivate him with their unique style – to step in front of the lens of renowned photographer Ari Seth Cohen. In the section titled “NOW WHAT”, curated by Nicolas Vamvouklis, the choreographer Angelos Papadopoulos will present “An UMBRA Story”, his new line of work that moves within the realm of dreams. The street market, its architecture and protagonists, will be in the epicentre of the collective walking performance “Markets and Markets” by the Collectif ΜASI. Despina Sanida Crezia, through her work “Such A Crybaby”, delves into youth fan culture, expressed through sound, movement, and voice. Finally, Katerina Zacharopoulou with “Performance as Interview as Performance”, fashions a second dress atop her own, through the responses she receives from the audience in the context of a silent, written “interview”.
One of the first galleries you will meet upon entering Art Athina, is Zoumboulakis Galleries, where an interesting environ has been created.
  • Editions, presents, in this year’s edition of Art Athina, Athens Art Book Fair, the first initiative in Greece with an exclusive focus in fine art editions. A few days before its sixth edition, the independent, artist-run initiative that aims for promoting and supporting the production of local editions, for fostering a community around independent publishing, and for establishing connections with similar publishing approaches, joins forces with Art Athina. Within the scope of this artistic collaboration, it is showcasing a selection of fine art editions.
  • Art Athina Art for Tomorrow Talks Powered by TATOÏ Club,a new series of talks and exchange of ideas about contemporary art, is presented for the first time in Art Athina, curated by Marilena Koutsoukou, the fair’s Director of Development, and Kim Conniff Taber, editor-in-chief of Art For Tomorrow. The key topic, that will guide the questions, is “how can the collectors, exhibitors and supporters of the art contribute to shaping a more inclusive and versatile cultural future?”. Art Athina Art for Tomorrow Talks Powered by TATOÏ Club will be hosted at Aigli Upstairs, established as a venue partner of Art Athina.
  • Kid’s Educational Programme, features “Little Athina” the educational programme for children, comprised of, inter alia, creative workshops of painting, architecture, mixed media and theatrical plays. The programme is designed for this year’s edition of Art Athina by KROMA, an international, non-profit, Contemporary Art & Culture platform. The central theme is Athens and the many ways proposed to the fair’s young friends to discover it. For the second consecutive year, Art Athina and KROMA, collaborate with the civic non-profit organization Life is For All, with the aim of including children and adolescents with learning differences and neurodevelopmental disorders in the educational workshops.

The award-winning design consultancy, G Design Studio that has been an integral member of the team for the past nine years, designed the new visual identity of the fair and this year’s edition catalogue.

Emphasis is consistently placed on the international aspect of the fair. The VIP programme, designed by Marilena Koutsoukou and Theodora Koumoundourou, is realised this year for the first time with the generous support of the National Bank of Greece, is inviting international art enthusiasts that will acquire a substantial understanding of the Greek contemporary art scene through a carefully targeted programme. At the same time, the presence of the international press in Athens enforces the promotion of the fair beyond the Greek borders, with support from Aegean Airlines and Donkey Hotels.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Art Athina Young Artist Award continues, aiming to support local artistic creation. The award is presented in collaboration with MOMus-Museum Alex Mylona, one of the five museums of The Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts Thessaloniki (MOMus).

Artists up to 45 years old, who live and work in Greece, are eligible to participate, following recommendation by their representing gallery which has showcased at least one solo show of their work.
