Antonios’ 40-year art project at Ekfrasi

ΕKFRASI-YIANNA GRAMMATOPOULOU is presenting the solo exhibition of Antonios entitled ‘ESPACE DE MÉMOIRE 1985 – 2025’. The exhibition, which was inaugurated on September 30, runs till October 25, and is an opportunity for viewers to see a very unique art project which has evolved over the last 40 years. The relationship between language and the art-making process unite in this project, which is based on a deeply rooted philosophical text.

‘Red Memory’

‘ESPACE DE MÉMOIRE’ is a project by Antonios Panagopoulos, initiated in 1985 and continuously evolving since then. In 1988, the artist composed a philosophical text that articulates the generative foundation of his work. From that point on, he adopted language as a primary tool of his art and translated the text into all the languages of the world. This process is not regarded as a mere translation of content, but as a lived imprint of each culture.

Memory, a fundamental element of his artistic approach, functions as light that contends with oblivion, darkness, and determines the fragment of space-time to be revealed. His artistic vision is to transfer an image of his ideal world into the objective one, while at the same time highlighting the bonds that unite people.

Antonios Panagopoulos was born in Athens in 1957, where he lives and works. He studied Music, Mechanical Engineering, Interior Design, Structural Applications, and Painting. He attended the free painting workshop of G. Vogiatzis and audited sculpture courses at the School of Architecture in Athens, taught by the sculptor Thodoros. In 1980, he was selected by the Athens School of Fine Arts as an exceptional talent. He has worked in theater, film, and advertising. Since 1984, he has dedicated himself to his artistic project under the general title ESPACE DE MÉMOIRE.

Duration: September 30 – October 25
