A RETURN TO NATURE might not be entirely possible for mankind, but certainly an effort to rekindle our relationship with nature is something that concerns many an artist today. The Ekfrasi – Yianna Grammatopoulou art gallery presents the solo exhibition of Yiannis Kastritsis entitled ‘Back to the Fields’, which re-examines aspects of the relationship between nature and contemporary human nature.
The works in the exhibition have been created by the artist in the last period of time. It is a painting-sculpture environment where paintings in various media come into conversation with a large herd of clay animals. With the symbolic title ‘Back to the fields’, the artist makes a comment on the removal of modern man from the natural environment and his alienation from the experiential perception of nature.
The artist himself remarks about his latest work: “I tried to see nature as an unknown entity, as a new challenge and at the same time as a question, whether nowadays it can be a point of reference, a creative starting point. The idea of meeting again the young mythical shepherd Attis, who grazes his flock on a mountain always captivates me. Until then I will be making clay animals and representations of landscapes hoping to include something of the unprocessed perception of the animals…”
The art historian Yiannis Bolis notes about the work of Kastritsis: “His visual intention to approach aspects of the landscape is combined with an inner lyrical-romantic mood that gives the depiction of the world, mental comfort, emotional power and expressive truth. With purely painterly means, with synthetic precision and with design and color qualities, he presents a fluid world, surrendered to the elements of nature, which however, goes beyond impressionistic recording in order to reach realistic realizations”
