Romanian culture and costumes

THE UNION of Romanian Women of Greece, the Union of Greeks of Romania and the Hellenic-Romanian Friendship Association “Agioi Konstantinos and Eleni” – Aspropyrgos, with the support of the Organization of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA) and the Embassy of Romania in Athens have organised from 24 to 26 June at the Cultural Center “Melina”, a three-day event entitled ‘Romanian folk costume, an element of a cultural heritage.’

The programme of events includes an exhibition dedicated to the World Day of IA (Romanian traditional costume) and traditional Greek dances with the famous dance group KYMATA, based in Ploiești / Prahova and representing the Hellenic Union of Romania. On the second day, a Round Table on "The popular costume in the context of Romanian immigration" is organized in the Romanian language at the exhibition space.

The exhibition is structured in four thematic sections:

BYZANTINE ICONS – HAGIOGRAPHY MICHALIS ARESTIS

The largest section of the exhibition entitled THE ROMANIAN POPULAR COSTUME – PAGE OF EUROPEAN HISTORY includes 24 complete Romanian costumes belonging to the valuable collection of the ethnographer FLOCEA DARIE SILVIU as well as those of 20 other individuals. Romanian traditional costumes, a key element in saving and reconstructing the lives of people, are presented along with other authentic works of Romanian folk art: weaving and embroidery works, ceramics and everyday items. The Romanian folk costumes were preserved with care and love, so that today they are able to offer to the admiration of the public an important exhibition.

The section “GNGERI CU ALTIȚE / THE ANGELS WITH PLUMED WINGS” – La blouse roumaine includes nine angels with plumage wings, inspired by the motifs of the traditional IA, among them The Angel of the Renaissance, the Angel D Zois, The Angel of the traditional blouse IA. It should be noted that the Angel of Friendship and the Sea was created especially for the Athens Event.
