LAST DAYS of Natassa Gryllakis’ solo exhibition ‘Timeless’ at the Lefa Municipal Gallery in Psychiko, but definitely worth a visit! In this exhibition Gryllakis tries to capture the essence of timelessness in works which incorporate a variety of mediums and techniques: from spray paint, acrylics, pencils and oils, to the use of Japanese Shojo Gami paper, used to create partitions in Japanese interior spaces. The durability of this paper has allowed the artist to experiment and to add onto it her creative mark-making and stenciling techniques in many layers. Once the artist has created her works on this special paper, she then glues it onto canvases or wooden surfaces some of which have also been cut into shapes. And she then continues to work on the surface. Layers of varnish are also added in order to stabilize the mediums and to guarantee their untarnished longevity. Gryllaki wants the final result to look like it hasn’t been touched by the human hand, although the opposite is in fact true!

Anastasia Gryllaki studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Beaux Arts at the workshop of Vladimir Velicovic, and has exhibited her work both here and abroad. In 2004 she designed the jewellery and accessories in the ‘Klepsidra’ collection for the Inauguration ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens. She has worked as a stage designer and costume designer for cultural institutions such as the National Theatre and the Kalamata Dance Festival. Her artworks may be found at the Sofitel Hotel at Venizelos Airport, and in other private collections both here and abroad.

The exhibition ‘Timeless’ has been curated by art historian/museologist Eliza Gerolymatou.
